Making the grind more fun

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, yet another time!

It's been quite some time since I've last posted something Minecraft related. But fear not, the lack of square-graphics has now come to an end.

As I already mentioned, I play modded Minecraft, more specifically Feed the Beast modpacks like Infinity or the Direwolf20 pack. While there are about 2 or 3 really fast and efficient ways to approach early gameplay, I tend to get drawn towards more unorthodox, sometimes complicated and underestimated ways of grinding through the early stages of the game, because - let's be honest here - always diving into EnderIO/Thermal Expansion for Oredoubling, with a Woodfarm to get Charcoal to power your machines, then rushing an Ender Pump for Lava-Power to run an Ender Quarry and then building a giant AE System is rather boring and "easy". Same goes for any Laser Drill-Setup that's powered by a Big Reactors Reactor/Turbine.

To break through that routine I've tried many different ways, from rushing an Arcane Bore (Thaumcraft) over starting with Blood Magic and getting a Silk Touch-Ritual of Magnetism going to grinding through early game with IndustrialCraft² as my only tech-mod.

The things I've discovered by doing so range from really interessting and useful to plain bad or undoable. Nonetheless, today I want to share probably the most useful discovery as of yet with you:
Endless Redstone and Power thanks to Natura. The only restriction is that it's only suited for early game if you're playing on a server that has a public Nether Portal.

What you'll need
So basically you'll have to get 31 Iron, 17 Gold, 20 Tin, 4 Lead, 120 Redstone, 2 Netherbrick, 4 Raw Plastic, 1 Ink Sac, 1 Cactus Green and some Stone, Wood and Glas. Then you'll only need to get 9 Netherrack and you're ready to build.

Building step by step

At first you'll need to build a 3x3 platform at a
rather big height. The tree we will grow will be pretty big and grow upside down as you might
have seen if you've already collected the sapling.
(Candles for scale since I had no banana...)

Alright, now plant your sapling right in the center of the platform and start to bone meal it until it grows. That is necessary in order to then be able to place the harvester and autonomous activator correctly.

Now place the two first machines like in the first picture on the right. The autonomous activator will be in charge of replanting the sapling since the MFR Planter isn't capable of planting upside down plants/saplings.

Next place a little buffer chest on the back of the harvester and surround it with your Transfer Nodes. Once your farm is running for a while you might wanna get a bigger chest or something to clear out excess saplings and wood.

Then you connect your Sawmill to the Transfer Node on top and place the Generator right next to it. That way the Sawmill can dump its product into the Generator which will in return supply it with power. With the power conduits you'll then only need to connect the generator with the other two machines like shown below.

Time to configure the filters:

The first one is set to only output Redstone and is put into the left Transfer Node...

...the second will output the two types of Blood Wood and is located in the top Transfer Node to supply the Saw Mill...

...and the Sapling Filter will be put into the Transfer Node situated at the right and will supply the Autonomous Activator.

We're almost done. The only thing left to do is pumping out the Redstone to produce power and or collect it for crafting. But wait, why Redstone?! Isn't that a Tree Farm?! ... Well, it is a Tree Farm but the trees we're using have the nice feature that they will drop Redstone like normal Oaks drop Apples. And that I think is worth all the trouble of planting them upside down.

On the picture shown below I use all of the produced Redstone for power by melting it down into liquid form and then pumping it into my Heated-Redstone Generator. You can of course simply collect the Redstone in a barrel or split the income 50/50, your choice.

The only thing left to do is connecting the Void Fluid Pipe to the Harvester since it will run slower if it has nowhere to put the sludge it produces and the pipe will take care of that. If you've got a Sludge Boiler you might even want to pump it out for real...

If you have now built the farm exactly like I did, you now  only have to configure your inputs and output on the Sawmill and Magma Crucible like shown on the left, I don't forget to set the back slot of your Autonomous Activator to Input aswell. Then you should only need to put some wood into your Generator to get the first bit of power going and watch as the Harvester chops away.

Of course you can always expand your farm by adding a range upgrade to the harvester for example the quartz one is pretty cheap since you have to have Nether access anyway to build this farm and allows for 3 more trees to be planted and farmed. Just place another Activator and run the Sapling Supply Line and some power over to it. Just make sure they're far enough away from each other in so the leaves don't overlap too much. (The picture below shows you a farm with 3 trees that allows you to feed 1 to 2 Redstone Generators rather reliably - I added the 3rd one for asthetics...) Of course upgrading the Stirling Generator down the line will increase the speed of your farm as does adding a second Autonomous Activator that right clicks the saplings with bone meal.

That's it for today... If you liked it please leave a comment!
